Past Heroines &
Generational Legacies
When you think about women, what,
probably, readily comes to mind are wives, mothers, home keepers, children
bearers and so on. Does any man ever think of women in better lights than
those? That is a very technical question to throw at men.
Women, from yesteryears till date,
have played significant roles in the shaping and reshaping; negotiating and
renegotiating of power relations throughout the world. Despite their
contributions, however, they have often been regarded as the other sex, weaker
vessels and the likes. That notwithstanding, women have always shown
their importance by subtly taking over the affairs of the world through their
management of the basic unit of political organisation - the family. A woman
could control her children and influence men through this power.
As we celebrate the International Women's Day (2015), we take a retrospective look at two Nigerian female heroic figures who showed the world that there are two sides to a coin - figures who did not just influence their worlds but also passed down their attributes through their lineages.
